Kansas City Chiefs year in review

The Chiefs made the regular season look easy. Their only stumble was in Week 5 when they lost 40-32 against the Las Vegas Raiders, a stunning upset loss at home to their division rivals. Otherwise, they were perfect in games where Mahomes started at quarterback, finishing 14-2 after losing in Week 17 when they rested their starters with the AFC’s No. 1 seed already secured.

Mahomes was the catalyst once again on offense, throwing for 4,740 yards with 38 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire led the team in rushing as a rookie with 803 yards and 4 touchdowns.

WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce were outstanding weapons for Mahomes, recording 1,276 and 1,416 yards receiving, respectively.

How the Chiefs can win Super Bowl 55

The Chiefs are going to score in this one. Tampa Bay’s defense is solid, but the Buccaneers don’t necessarily have the talent in the secondary to match up with Hill and Kelce. In their first meeting this season, Hill caught 13 passes for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns, torching the Bucs’ corners at every turn.

For the Chiefs to win this game, Hill doesn’t need to go off for 200-plus yards again, but he will need to create a big play or two. Tampa Bay can rush the passer, so if Mahomes gets the ball out quickly, it will greatly help the Chiefs offense if Hill can turn a short pass into a big gain.

Defensively, the Chiefs need to limit the production of Bucs WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Evans has been hampered by a knee injury, which could limit him, but if he’s fully healthy, he’s a tough matchup for the Chiefs’ defensive backs. And as always, pressuring Brady will be critical.

The Chiefs defense, led by DB Tyrann Mathieu, will be the difference in this game. They haven’t allowed more than 29 points with the starters playing since Week 11 and gave up just 41 total points in their first two playoff games.

2021 Super Bowl prediction: Chiefs 31, Buccaneers 27

As good as both of these teams (and quarterbacks) are, I think the Chiefs offense will just be too much for the Bucs to handle. With Kansas City’s defense rounding into form (20.5 points per game allowed in the postseason), the Chiefs will emerge victorious for the second straight year.

They’ll cover the 3-point spread by winning 31-27, and the score will go Over the projected total of 56.5 points.

Brady is widely considered the greatest quarterback of all time, but a head-to-head win by Mahomes and a second straight Super Bowl for the Chiefs would leave that conversation open.

What Tampa Bay does best on defense is eliminate the run game. Against Kansas City, that only puts the ball in Mahomes’ hands more often. He also has the mobility and athleticism to evade Tampa Bay’s pass rush, which ranked fifth by ESPN’s Team Pass Rush Win Rate.

Take the CHIEFS (-165) to go back-to-back and win Super Bowl 55.

The Buccaneers’ best hope in Super Bowl 55 is to keep Mahomes and the Chiefs offense off the field. They’ll look to feed RBs Ronald Jones II and Leonard Fournette as often as possible.

Kansas City Royals

Brady also has plenty of receiving weapons capable of working the clock via the passing game, but it will all be for naught against Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. If the Chiefs are able to get a lead, they’ll then turn to rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire to drain the clock and keep Brady away from an attempted comeback.

Back KANSAS CITY -3 (-110) to win by at least 4 points.

As mentioned, the Chiefs fell shy of the projected line in last year’s championship game, though that was mostly the fault of the 49ers.

Expect a high-flying aerial attack in perfect conditions in Tampa, Fla. We’re backing the Chiefs to win, so we’re also expecting Mahomes to be at his best.

Take the OVER 55.5 (-105) with Brady and the Bucs doing more to contribute to the total than bettors received from the Niners last year.
